Planters Energy Network (PEN) was initiated as Registered Society in 1989 at Madurai Kamaraj University, India to promote renewable energy in plantation and other industries for energy efficiency by eminent scientist like Prof.M.S.Swaminathan and leading planters like Shri. L.Narayana Chettiyar.
Dr.C.Palaniappan founder member of PEN who was a Senior Associate Scientist of International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Trieste, Italy funded by UNESCO and IAEA. His wide 30 years experiences in the field of solar thermal has generated a faster growth to the organization.
Since 1989, PEN has Installed 12000 sq.mtr of solar collector for tea leaves drying, spices drying, fruits and vegetables dehydration, dhal, leather, ceramics, fish, cloth and salt drying and also 2750 sq.m solar water heater as well as SPV power.
Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MFPI) and National Research Development Corporation ( NRDC – a Government of India Undertaking) extended their support to Planters Energy Network through Research and Development projects.
Successfully conducted three International Conferences to disseminate the applications of Solar and other renewable energy technologies to Industries and agriculture – one at UPASI Coonoor, Nilgiris in 1994 and two at IIT Madras in 1997 and 2000.
Developed innovative projects in collaboration with leading Institutions and Universities in Germany (Technical University of Munich, Munich & Institute of Agricultural Engineering – ATB, Potsdam, Berlin), Italy (International Center for Theoretical Physics – ICTP Trieste & Ancona University), Netherlands and Australia.
Received 2 patents on its Solar Air Heating Technology.
Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has invited Dr C Palaniappan in its Solar Thermal Energy Sub Committee ME 04:1 as an expert.
